Its hard drive related but the drive now -seems- fine. The key reason why IA was down for so long was a silly bug with Samba (which allows Linux to connect to windows share drives), basically I backup the complete IA system weekly (with daily backups of the web and email) to a Samba share drive on my Windows PC. The problem was that Samba can't write files bigger than 2GB for some reason, of course there were no error messages or warnings it just stopped copying after 2GB. So both my daily and weekly backups were only a snippet (thank goodness the most important snippets) of the system. ARGH!The bottom line is this: do regular backups. These days there is no excuse for not having a drive decided to backup, you can buy a 500GB drive (enough for even the most discerning donkey porn afficianado) for ar... Anti-bacterial agent found in water - A university friend and roommate once did a study of different "anti-bacterial" soaps and found that normal soap actually killed more e-coli bacteria than any of the then available anti-bacterial brands. Of course, the main issue with these products is not whether they work or not, its what affect they are having on bacteria in the long-run. Clearly super-bacteria have already been found and the better we get at killing them the worse they will become for us in the long run. A recent report shows that there are even bigger concerns, the chemicals found in some soaps are now being found in large quantities in our water supplies mmm bacteria free-water.
Speaking of the importance of clean, bacteria riddled water on our health, the Suzuki Foundation has a nice piece on water and its rising importance in our d... Mini-block holes and Teen Fusion -
How safe do you feel when a US teenager can create a fusion reaction in his garage ? Yeah me too.

Vista, Vista and more Vista - You can't escape it. You will be absorbed into the Vista borg its only a matter of time or at least that's what this week's Cringley is all about. But which version of Vista is right for you? For me it'll be the cracked version of Ultimate provided that there are no serious privacy concerns and I'll be waiting for at least a few rounds of fixes first. Even though Cringley thinks you'll be forced to upgrade, if you're like me you'll want to know what you're getting over Windows XP, here's a head-to-head comparison.

While I was away the server completely crashed all I was left with was a page of DMA hard drive errors it wouldn't reboot and I couldn't get anything off of it. Re-installing Linux took forever especially since my main backup appeared to have errors in it! Argh. Anyway, I think we're back with just a few minor things still not working. Those of you on RSS will probably see some duplicate articles sorry about that. Please don't bother posting articles to IA using the Post link above, I'm getting at least 10 of them a day from spammers and I don't have the time to go through each one to determine the wheat from the chaff (or whatever the stupid metaphor is) I'm working towards transitioning IA to a new blog software but its taking a long time so bear with me.... US Citizens to be required to have clearance to leave the US - US Citizens to be required to have clearance to leave the US
In its sad, awful slide toward Cold War Russian civil liberties: "The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (HSA) has proposed that all airlines, cruise lines-even fishing boats-be required to obtain
clearance for each passenger they propose taking into or out of the
United States". Wow. I think every time we refer to the US as the land of the free, we'll need to put that "free" in quotes.
Before the US elections, many sites were reporting that there would be an electronic voting fiasco
Over a third of US residence voted by machine (including a state-by-state break-down)
Security expert Bruce Schneier on ... The Great Firewall of Canada - Canadian ISPs have decided that they will begin blocking certain terror websites for all their users. Some are calling it "The Great Firewall of Canada" named after the slag term for the Chinese Firewall that blocks all sorts of content. The blocking will also apparently be used to block access to Child Pornography. I'm a bit torn on this one because I totally agree that Child Porn should not be viewed and that terror should not be supported but (especially in the case of terror stuff) this is information and information should be free. Instead of blocking it why not prosecute the offenders?! Plus, its been shown many times before that no block only blocks the intended material it always ends up blocking useful information.

A saliva derivative has been found to be ... The Software Junkie: Audio - For me, the Audio category hold a bunch of programs (like Sony Acid and Steinberg Cubase) but for those that don't dabble in music making, this category is pretty short and sweet:
dBpowerAMP Music Converter (shareware) is the definitive audio codec converter. It can pretty much convert from any format to any format. I use it often and love it!
foobar2000 (freeware) is one of my favourite programs these days. Its a very simple, yet very powerful music player. It plays pretty much all formats and does so without taking up much CPU. It can also convert formats, rip CDs and do a bunch of other things. Hopefully it'll get a better skinning system soon to improve its sparse looks.
Mp3tag (freeware) is the best tagging program out there. It allows you to edit the tags of most major audio codecs and does a bunch of great aut... Java Opensourced and Vista Cracked -
A nice little extension (Add-on) for Firefox called IE Tab allows you to open an internet explorer tab within Firefox perfect for those few sites that don't yet support Firefox.
If you crave more control over your Firefox tabs (and more power over crash recovery) check out the TabMixPlus add-on.
So far I can't see an appreciable difference, but the FasterFox add-on is suppose to make your Firefox experience faster.
PageAddict is another Firefox add-on that records how much time you spend on all the sites you view in Firefox. Cool idea especially when it stores the info locally (so no privacy concerns).

Yet another great idea, its the ... Printer Ink costs more than Human Blood - Any long time IA reader will know my absolute distaste for printer manufacturers, I don't think it should be legal to see hardware at a loss then sell mandatory accessories at ridiculous prices. Why? Well have a look at this great comparison between the costs of different liquids. Note the far right column. That's pretty fucked up right there.

Great idea for a site, ... On being a Mac Guy - Warning this is going to get geeky!
Ok, so I got my new MacBook Pro 15" Core 2 Duo the day after ordering (on the day that it was annouced to the public of course) Not bad Apple!Ever since I've been immersing myself in the Mac experience. About a week and a half ago, I officially retired my old Dell laptop and have been using the Mac as my primary work machine. I'm going to write a story soon about all the software I've uncovered for the Mac. I think its going to be a long story because I may as well compare the software I'm now using with whats on the PC. I'm in the somewhat unique position of being an interface expert, a windows expert and a software addict plus I'm skeptical but open to change!Overall my impression is that there isn't much difference between Windows and OS X. Shocked? I am. I've heard so much about how great the Mac interface is but so far, I'm not finding it much functionally different. I'd say its 90% the same thing as Wi... Big Brother is Shouting at You -
London's disturbingly large number of CCTV cameras are now getting another Orwellian upgrade: loadspeakers. So now, not only are you being constantly watched but you may be constantly being shouted at.
Speaking of the UK, some British pubs are fingerprinting all pub drinkers in order to get an alcoholic drink! Wow, and I thought video cameras at clubs was pretty bad.
My prediction is that in the next 10 years, we'll be seeing huge privacy fiascos on a weekly basis unless there are government mandated security measures put into place, for now read all about the Facebook fiasco.
Bruce Schneier on how ridi... Internet Addition - Appropriately, there have been a couple of articles in the paper and on the net recently about addiction to the internet. Since that was the original point of this site and because well I'm unsure whether I'm an internet addict or not. I mean, I feel like I can live without the internet but life would be less productive thats for sure. Anyway, the first article asks the big question: Are you addicted to the Internet? The second article points out that internet addicts can be as ill as alcoholics which is funny it its overstatement, I might be just as ill but my illness makes me smarter which isn't really an illness at all.
Cringley has even more interesting news on WiMax and how Sprint can do W... The Software Junkie - Video - Whether its surfing You-Tube or using Usenet to complete your donkey porn collection, video is one of the most confused and disjointed PC technologies going right now. The problem (for the most part) is that there are about 15 major video codecs and probably four million minor variants. Video is also complicated by innumerable age-old technologies (like TV) and the rapid pace of development in the world of PC video in the past few years.
So what tools do you need find the perfect donkey money-shot?
Adobe Premiere Pro (Commercial) is the defacto video editing standard. If you need to edit video, this is the place to start. Like most other professional level Adobe products, Premiere has a steep learning curve but once you've figured out the basics, its a very powerful tool for creating whatever video you want. The big problem (for web users) with Premiere is i... Copyright © 2009, QualityHosting4U's Link Exchange. All Rights Reserved. |
